Karthik, this is my favourite kind of essay. It’s so good, it leaves me satiated and fulfilled for the moment with so many things to take away - realizations about the self, about all humanity and its intersection with art.
I took a course on Children's Literature during the MA (Education) at APU. We would read a seemingly straightforward picture story book in class and then Prof. Shailaja Menon would quiz us all - 'So, what is this story about? Do you think there is anything more to it? What do you think the pictures in the book are telling us?'. By the end of it, we would get so many perspectives from the class of 40 odd students that it would no longer be the book we thought it was.
Whoooooa! I left that film with so many many feelings and zero understanding...i just could not think while the movie was on..... What a lovely piece ..matlab really
It was a lot to take in one viewing. While relying on subtitles and the old Tamil movies playing in the background (genius but draining). I could give my attention to other things during the second viewing. Thanks so much for your feedback :))
Yes yes! Highly recommend a second watch. I was sure there was more to the movie than what I had seen on first viewing that I watched it a second time on the following day itself.
I loved the movie too. Felt it more than understood it. The background score had a life of its own too, nahin? Your review takes the movie to the next level!
Hey Nidhi, yeah the background score was crazy genius but also overwhelming for those of us reading subtitles. On second viewing, i only glanced over those subs. That's another layer altogether.
My favourite part is still the way James literally walks into becoming Sundaram. Mammootty didn't give either of them any histrionics to separate the characters. What a performance!
The way u got this film into the essay is amazing. The movie is brilliant as is this essay!🤩
Thanks so much, Savvy! I was so intrigued by this film that I watched it a second time the following day itself. And, why are you up so early?
I am in Coimbatore for work. Traveling to Erode. Hence awake. Plus i guess my mallu film radar is very strong. 🤩
Trust a fellow Slack writer to ask another: Why are you up so early? ;)

One of my favourite films. It had me sobbing at times but I also found it oddly comforting.
Lovely essay and I like the way you have correlated it situations in our daily lives.

Fascinating. I need to see the movie again. It remains one of my favourites ever

Will surely do. Wonder what layers will be uncovered!

Indeed. I’m a very late entrant into the Mammootty fan club. He just slips into character.
‘Let him get some sleep, maybe he will feel like himself again… Let him eat his lunch first, he might feel better after that.’ This.
